Fundraising to build four wildlife crossings in west-central Oregon recently topped the $1 million mark, passing an important threshold to apply for matching federal funds.
A coalition of organizations want to build the structures between Bend and Suttle Lake, an area that is a migration corridor for elk and mule deer. Approximately 350 to 600 vehicle-wildlife collisions happen there annually.
“Highway 20 is a formidable barrier for wildlife. A wide diversity of species, large and small, need to cross Highway 20 to access food, water, shelter and other resources,” Rachel Wheat, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, wildlife connectivity coordinator, told KTVZ-TV. “Animals trying to cross the highway risk injury or death, and this risk is increasing as more people choose to live and recreate in Central Oregon.”
